Samburu woman having her hair braided, northern Kenya

I lead small photography groups past the places everyone photographs, and help them meet and photograph the people who live there.

In most places worth photographing, there is a version arranged for visitors and another that simply happens. The second takes experience, a local guide, an early start, and a willingness to drive another hour. That is the kind of tour I lead, across Africa and Asia. I help photographers with the part that is hard to practise at home: how to approach a stranger, how to ask, what to look for, and what to do when the answer is no. I write about how these tours run in my field notes.
